The Ayre QX-5 Twenty is a statement-level streaming DAC from one of America's most respected high-end audio manufacturers. Ayre Acoustics has long been synonymous with zero-feedback, fully balanced circuit design, and the QX-5 Twenty represents the pinnacle of that philosophy applied to digital source components.
At its heart sits the ESS ES9038PRO DAC chip, paired with a jointly developed Morion quartz crystal oscillator for exceptional timing accuracy. The result is a digital front end that handles everything from standard resolution streaming to high-res PCM and DSD files with equal composure. Ten digital inputs cover every conceivable source, while built-in network streaming brings Tidal, Qobuz and other services directly into the signal chain without the need for an external streamer.
Ayre's Diamond output stage and Equilock circuit ensure the analogue output stage is as carefully considered as the digital section, and a 100-step digital volume control means the QX-5 Twenty can drive a power amplifier directly if required. Originally retailing at around £12,000, this example represents a significant saving on the cost of new.
