On the other: the technically minded who will produce measurements demonstrating that a good digital source outperforms vinyl on almost every objective metric, and conclude that vinyl is nostalgia dressed up as audio quality.
Both camps are right about some things and wrong about others, and neither is asking the most useful question.
The most useful question is not which format is better. It is what each format actually does differently, and which of those differences matter to you.
Why this debate is usually had badly
Most vinyl vs streaming comparisons compare the wrong things. They compare a well set up turntable with a quality phono stage and a carefully chosen pressing against Spotify on a phone through earbuds. Or they compare a high resolution stream through a serious DAC against a warped record on a budget deck with a worn stylus. Neither comparison tells you anything useful about the formats themselves.
There is also a mastering problem that most people never think to mention. The same album on vinyl and on streaming is frequently a different master. The streaming version may use a loudness compressed transfer designed to sound punchy through a phone speaker. The vinyl pressing may have been cut from a different, less compressed source. When a vinyl record sounds more dynamic and alive than its streaming equivalent, it is often the mastering that is doing the work, not the format. This is important and we will come back to it.
What vinyl genuinely does differently
Vinyl is an analogue format. The groove physically encodes the audio waveform and the stylus reads it directly. There is no sampling, no quantisation, no conversion between analogue and digital domains. The signal path is shorter and more direct than any digital playback chain.
This has real consequences. Vinyl can carry audio information above 20kHz, beyond the range of standard CD quality digital. Whether ultrasonic content above human hearing affects the listening experience is genuinely debated. Some researchers argue it influences the perception of timbre even when not consciously heard. Others find no measurable effect. The debate is unresolved but the bandwidth is real.
Vinyl also carries spatial information in the groove, including phase relationships between channels, that a quality playback system can resolve into a genuinely three dimensional soundstage. This is not unique to vinyl, but the analogue encoding preserves certain aspects of the original stereo information in ways that some listeners find more convincing than digital alternatives.
Then there is the mastering point. Many classic albums were cut for vinyl at a time when streaming did not exist and the loudness war had not yet distorted the mastering process. Original pressings, and quality reissues made from the same sources, were cut with dynamic range intact. Buying and playing a well-mastered original pressing is a fundamentally different experience from streaming the modern master of the same album, and that difference is real and audible.
Finally, there is something that is not a technical argument but is genuinely important: vinyl demands your attention. You choose a record. You clean it. You lower the stylus. You listen to a side, then make an active decision about whether to turn it over. This ritual is not a disadvantage. For many listeners it is precisely the point. Vinyl encourages the kind of focused, undistracted listening that streaming, with its infinite catalogue and frictionless skipping, actively works against.
What streaming genuinely does differently
Streaming, at its best, is not the compromised, flattened experience that vinyl enthusiasts sometimes describe. A high resolution stream from Qobuz or Apple Music Lossless, played through a quality DAC into a good amplifier and speakers, is a serious listening experience. The argument that digital is inherently inferior to analogue was always more about implementation than about the format itself, and the best digital implementations available today are very good indeed.
Streaming's most obvious advantage is its catalogue. Sixty or seventy million tracks against whatever fits on your shelves. If you want to hear a recording you have never encountered, or explore a genre you know nothing about, streaming is simply without peer. No record collection can compete on breadth.
Consistency is another genuine advantage. A digital file plays identically every time. There is no surface noise, no risk of a tracking error on a difficult inner groove, no degradation with repeated plays. A well-ripped or well-streamed digital file does not change. Vinyl, by contrast, wears a little with every play. Not much, with a properly maintained stylus, but the physical reality of a stylus in a groove is that neither survives indefinitely.
Hi-resolution streaming deserves a specific mention. Tidal Masters, Qobuz Studio, Apple Music Lossless and Amazon Music Unlimited all offer 24 bit audio at sample rates of 44.1kHz or above. At 24-bit/96kHz or higher, a digital file carries more information than a standard vinyl pressing, not less. The argument that digital is the lower-bandwidth format is only true if you are comparing vinyl against standard 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality. Against hi-res, the comparison is different.
The mastering question: more important than the format
This deserves its own section because it is where most people's intuitions about vinyl are actually correct, but for the wrong reason.
Since the late 1990s, the music industry has engaged in what engineers call the loudness war: a competition between labels to make their releases sound louder than rivals on radio and on streaming platforms. The way you make a recording louder overall is to reduce its dynamic range, squashing the difference between the quietest and loudest moments. The result is audio that is consistently loud but lacks the peaks and troughs that make music feel alive and expressive.
Vinyl has a physical limit on loudness. A groove can only be so wide, and an excessively loud or compressed master will cause the stylus to jump or distort. This constraint is a practical ceiling on how badly a vinyl pressing can be mastered. Streaming has no such ceiling, and many streaming masters are significantly more compressed than their vinyl equivalents.
When someone says their vinyl sounds better than the streaming version, they are often right. But the reason is usually the master, not the format. The vinyl pressing was cut from a less compressed source. If you could play the vinyl master as a digital file, it would also sound better than the streaming version. The format is not doing the work. The mastering is.
The practical implication: if you care about this, seek out the best available master regardless of format. For older recordings, this often means an original pressing or a quality reissue cut from the original tapes. For newer music, look for releases that have been specifically mastered for vinyl, and check whether a hi-res streaming option is available that may have been separately mastered to a higher standard than the standard stream.
Who vinyl is genuinely for
Vinyl is for people who want a relationship with their music rather than access to it. If you find that you sit in front of Spotify for twenty minutes without deciding what to play because there is too much choice, vinyl solves that problem by reducing the question to what is on your shelves. If you want to listen differently, more intentionally, with a physical object in your hands and a side of music with a defined beginning and end, vinyl provides that in a way that no streaming service can replicate.
Vinyl is also for people who care about the music they already love. If you have thirty albums you listen to regularly, buying them on vinyl and hearing the best available pressing of each one through a decent system is a different and often more rewarding experience than streaming them at standard quality.
It is not for people who want immediate access to everything, portability, or the ability to explore new music without commitment. Streaming is simply better for all of those things.
Who streaming is genuinely for
Streaming is for people who value breadth, convenience and discovery. It is for people who listen to a wide range of music across many genres and artists. It is for people who want music in more than one room, or on the move, or who do not want to manage a physical collection.
Hi-res streaming is also increasingly a serious option for listeners who care about quality but want the convenience of a digital library. If you invest in a good DAC and listen through a capable amplifier and speakers, the quality ceiling is high enough that format is not a limiting factor.
Streaming is not for people who are easily overwhelmed by choice, or who find that the friction of choosing from millions of tracks prevents them from actually sitting down and listening to anything. For those listeners, vinyl's constraints are a genuine benefit.
Can you have both?
Yes, and most serious listeners do. A turntable for albums you love and want to hear at their best. Streaming for discovery, for background listening, for music you are not ready to commit to buying. The two formats solve different problems and they coexist happily in most systems: a streaming input on your amplifier alongside a phono input for the turntable, and the ability to use whichever suits the moment.

The loudness war in numbers. Dynamic range is measured in LU (Loudness Units) or DR (Dynamic Range). A DR score above 14 is considered excellent: the recording has wide peaks and troughs. Most modern streaming masters score between DR4 and DR8. A well-mastered vinyl pressing of a 1970s or 1980s recording will typically score DR12 to DR18. The difference is measurable and it is audible. Tools like the Dynamic Range Database (dr.loudness-war.info) allow you to check the DR score of specific albums and pressings before you buy.
Jitter and DAC implementation. The main quality variables in digital playback are the DAC (digital to analogue converter) and jitter: timing errors in the digital clock that cause distortion. Cheap DACs and poor USB implementations introduce jitter that degrades the sound in ways that are audible but difficult to describe precisely. A quality external DAC with a low-jitter clock and a clean power supply removes this as a variable entirely. The improvement from a quality DAC over a built-in sound card or basic streaming device is roughly comparable in magnitude to the improvement from a quality phono stage over a budget built in equivalent. Brands worth knowing in the pre-owned DAC market include Chord Electronics, Naim, Audiolab and Cambridge Audio.
MQA and hi-res formats. MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) was a proprietary hi-res streaming format used by Tidal that folded additional resolution into a standard file. It was discontinued by Tidal in 2024. The current hi-res landscape is cleaner: Qobuz and Apple Music Lossless offer straight FLAC or ALAC at 24-bit/96kHz or higher, with no proprietary encoding layer. These files contain more audio data than a standard CD quality stream and, played through a DAC capable of decoding the full resolution, represent the highest quality available from streaming.
The vinyl bandwidth argument in full. Standard CD quality digital (16-bit/44.1kHz) has a frequency response to 22kHz, limited by the Nyquist theorem to half the sample rate. Vinyl has no such hard ceiling: a good pressing can carry content to 40kHz or above. Whether content above 20kHz matters to human perception is the subject of the Meyer and Moran study (2007), which found no audible benefit in controlled listening tests, and subsequent research by Joshua Reiss which argued that ultrasonic content does affect perceived sound quality through intermodulation effects. The science is genuinely unsettled. What is clear is that the bandwidth is there on vinyl and not on standard digital, and that hi-res digital addresses this by raising the ceiling to 48kHz or higher depending on the sample rate used.
