Technics Says
Technics stunned the audio industry with the introduction of the linear tracking SL-10. This remarkable turntable offered the very latest in technology. Compact, beautiful design. Outstanding performance. And operational convenience and installation flexibility not available in any other turntable - until we introduced 2 more versions of our linear tracking concept, the SL-7 and SL-15.
Now, the SL-DL1 offers the same linear tracking tonearm with a direct drive turntable. The SL-DL1 provides virtually the same exotic features and superb performance as our original masterpieces. But its styling is modern and chic - it is slim, sleek, and bespeaks elegant technology.
And so Technics continues to stand the turntable world on its head, as music-lovers everywhere discover the amazing handling of our linear tracking line. No other turntable line can match the combination of performance, convenience, beautiful design, and record protection offered by Technics linear tracking turntables ... the science of sound in turntable technology.
Take a look at the SL-DL1 – you’ll notice immediately that the tonearm is short and straight, rather than long and pivoted. That's because this linear tracking tonearm is designed to track your records just as they were cut - in a straight line. Our remarkable dynamically balanced linear tracking tonearm actually eliminates tracking angle error and tonearm skating.
The dynamically balanced design means that corrective tracking force is constantly applied, for excellent performance under all conditions. A DC motor, governed by an advanced microcomputer, drives the tonearm along a low-friction slide bearing, while a string coupler effectively damps any vibrations.
And to assure the correct groove deflection angle across an entire album, a photocoupler near the stylus tip steadily monitors the relative angle of the stylus to the groove. And we've chosen a proven design for the arm mount a 4-point gimbal suspension for sensitive, low-friction response.
Even though the SL-DL1 is loaded with complex tonearm and drive system technology, you'll discover that operating this unit is incredibly simple. All you have to do is put a record on the platter, close the top, and press lightly on the start key. The turntable handles everything else. If you put on a standard LP, the platter will automatically rotate at 33.3 rpm. Put on a single, and the SL-DL1 will play it back at 45 rpm.
Even if you accidentally press the start button when there is no record on the turntable, the tonearm will not move. So it's practically impossible to damage the stylus. And all controls are on the front panel, outside the dust cover, for real convenience.
To capture all the musical nuances pressed into the record grooves, the tonearm comes equipped with a Technics high performance cartridge with a plug-in cartridge connector. The magnet circuit in this MM-type unit features an all laminated core to minimize high range loss and assure faithful conversion of cantilever vibration into audio signal information.
Overall frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 35,000 Hz and is flat to within ± 1 dB from 20 Hz to 10 kHz! Also, a high energy, disc-shaped samarium cobalt magnet and the one-point suspension system contribute to excellent tracking ability and low distortion.
The cartridge plugs directly into the linear tracking tonearm. The plug-in connector cartridge assures optimum matching of the cartridge and the tonearm assembly. At the same time, it provides a rigid cartridge-tonearm structure, so you need not worry about phasing or polarity errors, and you're guaranteed freedom from corrosion, for positive electrical contact. The identical plug-in connector is employed on the Technics SL-10, SL-7, and SL-15. Therefore, you can also use cartridges designed for those models.
In the original Technics direct drive system, the platter and motor-rotor were integrated in one unit to assure the highest mechanical precision. The integral rotor-platter direct drive motor's flat overlapped zig-zag coil configuration makes for high efficiency in a slim design. The superb rotational precision is achieved by a full cycle detection type FG control. The result is a mere 0.025% wow and flutter (WRMS). Rumble is - 78 dB (DIN B).
