Here's what buying correctly actually means.
1. Who you buy from - this is the one that matters most
Everything else on this list is downstream of this.
A specialist dealer with a physical premises, a published phone number, and a real track record has something to protect. They can't afford to misrepresent condition, because buyers return, leave reviews, and ring them up. Their warranty is enforceable because the business is there to honour it.
A private seller on eBay or a classified site has none of these constraints. Their description might be optimistic. Their idea of "fully tested" might mean "it powered on." If something is wrong when it arrives, your options are limited and your money is harder to recover.
This isn't a case against private sales entirely, experienced buyers who know exactly what they're looking for can find value there. But for any significant purchase, the accountability that comes with a specialist is not a small thing. It's the foundation everything else rests on.
2. Honest condition grading - specifics only
Every seller in the used market describes their stock as "excellent condition" or "good working order." These phrases are meaningless without something behind them.
What you're looking for is specificity. Not "cosmetically good" but "light wear to the top panel, see image 4." Not "works perfectly" but "tested across all inputs with a Rega Planar 3, both channels confirmed balanced, no noise at idle." The condition description should tell you what the seller actually found when they examined the item closely, not just that they looked at it.
A seller who notes "minor scuffing to the left side panel, remote has a broken clip but functions correctly, all inputs tested" is being honest and telling you that everything else is fine. That level of transparency is what to look for, and what should give you confidence.
3. Evidence of testing - not just the claim
"Tested and working" is the used market's equivalent of filler copy. What you need to know is what was tested, and how.
Look for specifics: which inputs were used, what was connected, what was verified. For a phono stage, was it tested with a cartridge, and which one? For a power amplifier, were both channels confirmed matched? For a turntable, has the bearing been checked and the belt replaced if due?
A listing that says "phono input confirmed working with channels balanced, no hum at idle, tone controls functioning" has been tested. One that says "fully tested, sounds great" almost certainly hasn't been, not to any standard worth the phrase.
4. What's included - box and accessories matter more than you'd think
This one gets overlooked by first time buyers and taken seriously by experienced ones.
Original packaging and accessories affect both the practical value and the resale value of an item. A Naim amplifier with its original box, power supply cover, and manual is worth more than the same unit without and the presence of original packaging is a reliable indicator of how carefully the previous owner looked after the equipment.
More practically: remote controls for modern streaming amplifiers are often expensive or unavailable to replace separately. If the remote is missing on a Hegel, a Linn Selekt, or a Naim Uniti, that's a real functional gap.
The checklist: original box, remote control, manual, any original cables, and model specific accessories (cartridge alignment tool for turntables, for example). Not having the box is rarely a dealbreaker. Missing a remote on a streaming amplifier is.
5. The warranty - read what it actually covers
A warranty on a used item is only as meaningful as the policy behind it. Three things to check: how long it runs, what it covers, and how you'd exercise it in practice.
A 30 day return window is not the same as a 6 month warranty. A warranty that requires you to cover shipping both ways on a large speaker effectively costs you to claim. And a warranty from a business with a real address and a phone number means more than one from a marketplace seller with a username.
The warranty matters most not because you expect to need it, but because a seller who offers a genuine one is telling you they're confident in what they've sold you. That confidence is itself a signal worth reading.
One thing the new kit can't offer
There's a genuine advantage to well used electronics that often goes unmentioned: quality hi-fi equipment sounds better after it's been run in.
Capacitors, transformers, and speaker drivers all benefit from hours of use they settle, loosen, and open up in ways that can take dozens of hours with new equipment. A used amplifier or speakers that have been well used have already done that work. You hear the equipment at its best from day one, without a run-in period that can make a new purchase feel disappointing before it settles.
It's a small thing, but it's real and it's the kind of thing that experienced buyers factor in without necessarily saying so.
The honest summary
The risks people worry about with used hi-fi are genuine but they're all concentrated in the how and the where, not in the equipment itself. Buy from a specialist who grades honestly, tests properly, and backs their sales with a real warranty, and the risk profile is extremely low.
