B&W Says

The flagship model in the 800 Series Diamond range is more than a speaker. It’s the culmination of half a century of acoustic research and engineering, and the pinnacle of audio performance. Designed for the most demanding professional recording studios and uncompromising music lovers, the 800 D3 offers unmatched levels of clarity and realism.
The original 801 speaker changed the game for the audio industry when it was launched in 1979. Right from the start, our flagship speaker was acclaimed as the benchmark for acoustic performance. Each successive re-launch raised the bar higher. And now we’ve done it again. The 800 D3 pushes the boundaries further than ever before. And sets a whole new standard for speaker performance.
The 800 D3 is the outcome of one of the most ambitious research and development projects we have ever undertaken. Its design incorporates a dramatic 868 changes over the model it replaces and its performance makes every bit as powerful a statement of our intent. This loudspeaker isn’t an evolution. It’s a revolution.
The 800 D3 is driven by technological innovation. From drive units to cabinet geometry, every major component has been rethought and reinvented. And the rulebook for loudspeaker design has been ripped up and rewritten in the process. The future of loudspeaker technology starts here.
The music you hear everywhere was heard first on 800 Series Diamond speakers. Ever since it was first introduced, the range has become the choice of artists, composers and top recording studios. Every day, musicians and sound engineers depend on 800 Series Diamond speakers to monitor music, safe in the knowledge that the sound in the control room will be faithful to the performance in the studio.
For some, it’s enough just to hear music. But others want to feel it. To savour every spine-tingling nuance and detail. To be as close to a musical performance as if they were there, with the artist at the moment it was recorded. We’ve been dedicated to realising this dream for 50 years. It’s been quite a journey. And when you listen to the 800 D3, you’ll know how far we’ve come.
The 6in FST™ midrange drive unit in the 800 D3 uses Bowers & Wilkins’ new Continuum woven material. Developed over an eight-year research project, it represents a significant step forward over Aramid Fibre.
The tweeter domes of the 800 D3 are formed of diamond, a super-material with ideal properties for delivering high frequency sound.
To eliminate unwanted resonances travelling through the structure and ensure cleaner treble from the Diamond Dome, the tweeter housing in the new 800 D3 is milled from a single solid billet of aluminium.
The latest iteration of the acclaimed Matrix structure has been computer-optimised for maximum stiffness. It uses stiff plywood panels reinforced with aluminium sections and is rigidly coupled to the inner face of the 800 D3 cabinet with thick steel plates.
As the choice of major studios, our flagship 800 Series has played a vital role in the history of recorded music since the 1970s.
