Description

Here we have a pair of the classic and highly sought after BBC designed LS3/5A from speaker specialists Rogers. They are the 15 Ohm variant and come in fully working condition with a few age related marks as to be expected most notably  some nicks in the veneer and some tiny blue paint flecks on one side.

Internal images are available to anyone wanting them – please just ask…

NB: the white marks on the woofers are just light relection.

Rogers Said….
An entirely new small Monitor Speaker offering exceptional performance in relation to size. For the first time a bookshelf speaker is available capable of a true monitor standard of reproduction. The most remarkable aspect of the overall performance is the astonishingly smooth extended bass response, never before achieved with an enclosure of such small size.
Designed by the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Research Department the speaker is produced under licence from the BBC and conforms to their specification LS3/5A.
Intended primarily for monitoring purposes, where space is at a premium and where high power levels are not required. The speaker will give superlative reproduction in domestic high fidelity installations, where the associated equipment is of a sufficiently high standard.
The positioning of the speaker is not too critical. The superb bass response of which it is capable is not dependant on corner location; in fact, a corner location should be avoided as this will tend to emphasise the bass response. Due to the efficient and extended treble response of the speaker a slight amount of filtering will probably be found necessary, on all but the very best programme material. For this reason an amplifier with a good low pass filter should be used.
The speaker is relatively insensitive, sensitivity being sacrificed for extreme smoothness of response. It should therefore be used with an amplifier having a nominal power rating of 25 watts.
The speaker employs two drive units in an IB (Infinite Baffle) enclosure. A 4” Bass Driver, with Plastiflex Doped Bextrene Cone, and a ¾” Dome Tweeter. Both the Bass and Treble Units are carefully selected to meet a rigid pass specification.
A sophisticated crossover uses 5% tolerance inductors and stable low loss capacitors for lifelong operation. The relative sensitivities of the bass and treble units are adjusted on test by means of a tapped inductor and selected capacitor values. The enclosure is made of selected woods with internal damping by means of acoustic foam pads.
The standard finish is teak veneer.
The special grille material has been selected to give on attractive appearance without having any effect on the treble response.
