Here we have something of an enigma in the Hi-Fi world. Which came first the chicken or the egg or in Hi-Fi terms the Ariston RD 11 or the Linn Sondek LP12? Now I’m not going to open the proverbial can of worms – there has been much said and written about the history of these two turntables but what is very certain is that they look very similar to each other. Dimensions are all but identical etc., etc. Anyway we have one of the much rarer Ariston RD 11S’ that for its age is in good condition although it would certainly benefit from a little restoration work. It will be professionally packaged and is supplied with a Mission 774 Tonearm. In addition you also get our standard three month warranty but please note this does not cover the Ortofon 2M Blue that is fitted.
Ariston Say….
As with all good things, the Ariston RD 11S is very simple in concept – and in turntable design, simplicity is the essence of perfection.
A 24-pole motor, specially designed by Ariston engineers for the RD IIS minimizes wow and flutter. Its smooth running, combined with the high mass 9½ lb. platter, have contributed to unquestionably excellent specifications. Wow and flutter is a mere 0.03%. Rumble is an exceptionally low -74dB.
The main bearing elements consist of a precision ground mirror-finished shaft resting on a perfectly spherical ball-bearing, giving a single point of contact – and reducing friction to a bare minimum.
The tone arm and platter are mounted on a sub chassis to achieve isolation from external vibrations. And two concentric rubber rings provide positive record support with minimum surface contact. thus eliminating electrostatic build-up.
A slip-clutch mechanism on the belt drive prevents belt stretching and aided by the high torque motor, ensures a swift and smooth build-up to playing speed.
Ariston Audio RD 11S. Brilliantly designed, precision engineered to bring you just one quality. Sound perfection.
The RD IIS comes standard in a teak base and a plexiglass cover with friction hinges for variable cover positioning. Manufactured and assembled in Scotland by skilled craftsmen for the discriminating audiophile.
Specifications:
Drive: Belt drive 24 pole hysteresis synchronous motor, on silicone isolation sub frame.
Platter: Two piece precision ground and balanced platter of 9.5 lbs. mass.
Main bearing: Precision PTFE. Main shaft with Teflon cushioned main bearing shaft. This ultra-low friction self-lubricating bearing gives the Ariston turntables state of the art performance. This new technology gives the Ariston turntables the lowest rumble figures measurable.
Suspension: Free floating sub cradle with low mass circular tone arm board and platter, on steel coil springs with polyurethane dampers. This unique system makes the Ariston turntables the least prone to feedback with minimal stylus bounce due to severe floor vibration.
Speed: 33 and 45 rpm.
Wow and flutter: 0.03%
Rumble: – 74 dB weighted.
Turntable weight: 13.0 kg
Mission Said….
Considered as one of the world’s finest pick up arms, the Mission 774 is designed to Direct Couple the cartridge assembly to the turntable mass. This is essential in that if the tone arm suffers free play, it will inevitably set itself in motion independent of record modulations thereby adding to and subtracting from information retrieved by the stylus tip.
Such free play would destroy speed, immediacy and attack inherent in musical transients. The secret of the 774 is its unique rigid bearing design, elimination of conventional “flapping” headshells and other resonating parts. total structural integrity, low effective mass and minimal pivot friction.
The 774 employs silicone viscose damping to enhance the performance of different cartridges.
